Rev. Abel G. Duncan. Evils of Violating the Laws of Health, and the Remedy: An Address Delivered Before the American Physiological Society at Their Monthly Meeting, February 7, 1838. Boston: Marsh, Capen & Lyon, 1838. Original 24-page stitched pamphlet advocating the principles of the early American health reform movement. Delivered before the American Physiological Society, Duncan’s address promotes the importance of physical, moral, and spiritual well-being while encouraging adherence to healthy living practices during a period when organized health reform was gaining national attention. The pamphlet includes the printed exchange of letters requesting publication of the address and concludes with Duncan’s appeal for continued efforts toward “moral and physiological reform.” The front cover bears an early ownership inscription reading “M. Emerson.”

Very good condition. Expected age toning, scattered foxing, edge wear, and several small corner chips. Original stitching remains intact with light separation at portions of the spine but securely bound. Contemporary ownership inscription and minor period notations to the front cover.

The American Physiological Society of the 1830s was among several reform organizations that emerged during the antebellum era advocating temperance, improved diet, exercise, hygiene, and other lifestyle changes believed to promote both physical health and moral character. Rev. Abel G.
