Joseph S. Stiborik and John G. King autographed Harry S. Truman First Day Cover commemorating the 33rd President of the United States. Radar operator Joseph S. Stiborik has signed in black ink, adding the inscription, “Radar Op. Enola Gay Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945.” Manhattan Project physicist John G. King has signed prominently in blue ink. The cover bears the May 8, 1973, Independence, Missouri, First Day of Issue cancellation.

Joseph S. Stiborik (1916-1995) served as the radar operator aboard the B-29 Enola Gay during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. A member of the elite 509th Composite Group, he operated the aircraft’s radar equipment and assisted with navigation during one of the most consequential missions of World War II.

John G. King (1920-2004) was an American physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos during the development of the world’s first atomic weapons. Following World War II, he continued his career in nuclear science and remained active in preserving the history of the Manhattan Project through lectures, publications, and educational outreach.
