Frederick L. Ashworth autographed Japanese Government-issued 5 Pesos occupation currency note. Printed for circulation in the Japanese-occupied Philippines during World War II, the note has been signed and inscribed in black ink, “Commander U.S. Navy, ‘Weaponeer’ Bock’s Car, Nagasaki - 9 August 1945.” The reverse displays the ornate engraved design characteristic of the series.

Frederick L. Ashworth (1912-2005) was a U.S. Navy officer and ordnance specialist who served as the weaponeer aboard the Boeing B-29 Bockscar during the atomic bombing mission over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. As the officer responsible for the assembly, arming, and release procedures of the “Fat Man” atomic bomb, Ashworth played a critical role in the mission. He later served in senior positions within the U.S. Navy’s nuclear weapons program and retired with the rank of vice admiral.
