Frederick L. Ashworth autographed commemorative cacheted cover honoring the 50th anniversary of the 509th Composite Group, postmarked at Wendover, Utah, on August 25, 1990. Ashworth has signed in black ink, adding the inscription: “Commander U.S. Navy ‘Weaponeer’ – ‘Bock’s Car’ Nagasaki – 9 August 1945.” The cover bears the official First Atomic Bombardment commemorative cachet and a 25¢ World Peace postage stamp.

Frederick Lincoln Ashworth (1912–2005) was a U.S. Navy captain who served as the weaponeer aboard the B-29 Bockscar during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. As the officer responsible for the assembly, arming, and release authorization of the “Fat Man” atomic bomb, Ashworth played a central role in one of the most consequential missions of World War II. He later served in senior naval and atomic energy positions, including as Commander of the U.S. Naval Ordnance Test Station at China Lake and as a leader within the nation’s developing nuclear weapons program.
