Agnew was a Manhattan Project physicist who helped construct Chicago Pile-1 under the direction of Enrico Fermi, the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor. He later served as a scientific observer during the Hiroshima atomic bombing mission aboard the instrument aircraft The Great Artiste.

Harold M. Agnew (1921-2013) was one of the most important scientists of the Manhattan Project. As a young physicist at the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory, he assisted Enrico Fermi in building Chicago Pile-1, the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, a milestone that made the atomic bomb possible. Agnew later joined the Los Alamos Laboratory and flew as the scientific observer aboard The Great Artiste during the Hiroshima mission, filming the atomic explosion. He went on to become director of Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1970 to 1979 and remained one of the most influential figures in American nuclear science.
