William E. Downey and Ray Gallagher autographed commemorative cover honoring the 50th anniversary reunion of the 509th Composite Group. Downey has added the inscription, “Chaplain (Col),” while Gallagher has inscribed, “Ray Gallagher.”

William E. Downey served as chaplain of the 509th Composite Group during World War II, providing spiritual guidance and support to the officers and enlisted men of the highly secretive unit responsible for the atomic bomb missions. He remained closely associated with the veterans of the 509th Composite Group throughout his life.
Ray Gallagher served as a combat crew member aboard the B-29 Bockscar. He participated in the Nagasaki atomic mission on August 9, 1945, during the second and final wartime use of an atomic bomb.
