Matthew B. Ridgway (1895-1993) was one of America’s most distinguished military commanders. During World War II he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division and later XVIII Airborne Corps, leading airborne operations in Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and Operation Market Garden. Following the war he served as Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Korea after General Douglas MacArthur’s dismissal, successfully stabilizing the front and restoring United Nations forces. Ridgway later served as the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army and is widely regarded as one of the most capable American generals of the twentieth century.
