Leonard Cheshire (1917-1992) was one of Britain’s most highly decorated Royal Air Force pilots of the Second World War. Awarded the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery, he flew more than 100 combat missions and later served as the British observer accompanying the atomic bombing missions over Japan. Following the war, Cheshire devoted his life to humanitarian work, founding the Cheshire Homes organization to care for people with disabilities around the world.
Herman Wouk (1915-2019) was one of America’s most celebrated novelists and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. His acclaimed works, including The Caine Mutiny, The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance, drew heavily upon his wartime experiences and became definitive literary accounts of the Second World War. Wouk was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Caine Mutiny in 1952 and remained one of the foremost chroniclers of the war throughout his long career.
