Details:
Military kepi-style dark blue wool cap featuring an embroidered gilt bullion wreath surrounding the initials “W.M.D.S.” across the front. The cap retains its original twisted bullion chin cord secured by decorative side buttons, black lacquered leather visor, brown leather sweatband, and black cloth interior lining. While the precise meaning of the embroidered initials has not been identified, the cap was clearly produced for a uniformed military, veterans, militia, fraternal, or civic organization utilizing military-style dress during the late nineteenth or possibly early twentieth century.
Good overall condition with expected age-related wear.
Military-style caps bearing embroidered organizational insignia were widely used throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by state militias, veterans’ organizations, military academies, ceremonial units, patriotic societies, and other uniformed associations. This example’s quality bullion embroidery and traditional kepi form make it an attractive display piece representative of that era.
