Ridgway has signed prominently in bold black marker, while Haig has signed above in blue ink, adding the inscription, “General, Ret. Army, CH.” (“CH” denoting his role as White House Chief of Staff).

Matthew B. Ridgway (1895-1993) was one of America’s most distinguished military commanders. During World War II, he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in Europe before assuming command of the Eighth Army during the Korean War, where he revitalized United Nations forces following the dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur. Ridgway later served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe and as U.S. Army Chief of Staff.

Alexander M. Haig Jr. (1924-2010) served with distinction in the Korean and Vietnam Wars before rising to become White House Chief of Staff under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He later served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe and as U.S. Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan. Haig was among the most influential American military and diplomatic leaders of the Cold War era.
