Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006) was the Associated Press photographer whose photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima became one of the defining images of the Second World War. Taken on February 23, 1945, the photograph earned Rosenthal the Pulitzer Prize for Photography and later served as the model for the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
Charles W. Lindberg (1920-2007) was a United States Marine with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. On the morning of February 23, 1945, he participated in the first raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Later that day, a larger replacement flag was raised on the summit and photographed by Joe Rosenthal, creating one of the most recognizable images of the Second World War. Lindberg remained one of the last surviving participants of the first flag raising and frequently shared his firsthand account of the historic event.
