Tex Hill autographed commemorative cover honoring the beginning of General Joseph Stilwell’s Burma campaign, signed in black ink with the inscription, "Tex" Hill, Sq. Ldr. 2nd Sqd. AVG. The reverse bears a lengthy handwritten letter by Hill discussing General Joseph Stilwell, the China-Burma-India theater, and a B-25 mission that suffered heavy losses.

In his handwritten account, Hill recalls that Stilwell “was a tough soldier but was not qualified as a Theater Commander.” He describes a mission involving replacement B-25 bombers for the 11th Bomb Squadron that were ordered to attack the Japanese airfield at Taungoo, Burma, without fighter escort. Hill writes that all but one aircraft were lost or badly damaged, with several crew members killed, and concludes that the aircraft “shouldn’t have been sent over.”

David Lee “Tex” Hill (1915-2007) was one of the original fighter pilots of the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers. Serving as commander of the 2nd Pursuit Squadron, “Panda Bears,” Hill became one of the AVG’s leading aces with more than a dozen aerial victories. After the Flying Tigers were disbanded in 1942, he continued serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces in the China-Burma-India Theater and remained one of the most respected pilots associated with the Flying Tigers.
