Alexander M. Haig Jr. autographed Canadian First Day Cover commemorating the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. The cover bears the Canadian “1939 – Day of Issue” cancellation dated November 10, 1989, honoring the 50th anniversary of the beginning of World War II, and is signed prominently by Haig in blue ink.

Alexander M. Haig Jr. (1924–2010) was one of the most influential American military officers and diplomats of the Cold War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served with distinction in the Korean and Vietnam Wars before becoming Military Assistant to National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and later White House Chief of Staff under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, playing a central role during the Watergate era and the presidential transition following Nixon’s resignation. Haig subsequently served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and Commander of NATO forces from 1974 to 1979 before being appointed the 59th U.S. Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan. His career spanned more than four decades of military service, diplomacy, and national leadership, making him one of the most recognizable American statesmen of the late twentieth century.
