Alexander Haig and Maxwell D. Taylor autographed First Day Cover honoring President Harry S. Truman, postmarked at Independence, Missouri, on May 8, 1973, for the issuance of the Harry S. Truman memorial stamp. Haig has signed boldly in black felt-tip, while Taylor has signed in blue ink beneath.

General Alexander M. Haig Jr. (1924-2010) served as White House Chief of Staff under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) for NATO, U.S. Secretary of State under President Ronald Reagan, and previously held senior military positions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

General Maxwell D. Taylor (1901-1987) was one of America’s most influential military leaders, serving as Commander of the 101st Airborne Division during World War II, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President John F. Kennedy, and later U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam. During World War II, Taylor participated in planning for the invasion of Japan and remained a key strategic advisor as President Harry S. Truman made the decision to use atomic weapons to bring the war to a close.
