The Attica prison uprising began on September 9, 1971, at the Attica Correctional Facility in western New York, where inmates seized control of the prison to protest living conditions, racial inequality, and the denial of basic rights. After four days of negotiations, the prison was retaken by New York State authorities, resulting in the deaths of 43 people, including inmates, hostages, and correctional personnel. The uprising became a defining moment in the prison reform movement and the broader struggle for civil rights and social justice in the United States.
