Walter White autographed typed letter on official National Association for the Advancement of Colored People letterhead, dated October 26, 1934, addressed to columnist Walter Winchell regarding a documented act of racial discrimination in Brooklyn. Signed in ink, “Walter White,” as Secretary, the letter details an incident following a Michigan State football game in which African American players, including star James McCrary, were refused accommodations at the Hotel St. George despite being celebrated publicly for their performance. White recounts how the players were denied entry solely due to race and forced to seek lodging elsewhere, ultimately staying at the colored YMCA.

White directly appeals to Winchell’s powerful media voice, urging him to speak out against such prejudice, writing that “if so powerful a voice as yours were raised on the other side of the question it would help mightily.” The letter also includes the striking line, “And we talk about Hitler’s Germany!” drawing a pointed comparison between American racial injustice and the rise of fascism abroad.
