Details:
Charles Sumner autographed handwritten quotation signed (AQS) on a 5 x 7.75” page, dated Washington, January 18, 1860. Penned entirely in Sumner’s hand, the brief but powerful inscription reads:
“Freedom for all!”
Charles Sumner
Washington
18th Jan. ’60.
Written just months before the election of Abraham Lincoln and on the eve of the Civil War, the quotation reflects the principle that defined Sumner’s public life and his unwavering opposition to slavery.
Near fine condition. Light age toning and scattered foxing consistent with age.
Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was a United States senator from Massachusetts and one of the nation’s leading abolitionists. An outspoken opponent of slavery, he became a central figure in the antislavery movement and was famously assaulted on the Senate floor in 1856 after delivering his “Crime Against Kansas” speech. During and after the Civil War, Sumner was a leading advocate for emancipation, equal civil rights, and Reconstruction, making him one of the most influential political voices of the nineteenth century.
