Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was one of the most influential figures of the American Civil Rights Movement. On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, leading to her arrest and sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The year-long boycott, led by a young Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., became a defining moment in the struggle against racial segregation and helped launch the modern Civil Rights Movement. Parks remained an active advocate for civil rights and social justice throughout her life, receiving numerous honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and becoming the first woman to lie in honor in the United States Capitol Rotunda. My Story is her personal account of the events that transformed both her life and the course of American history.
