James Farmer autographed first edition hardcover copy of Lay Bare the Heart: An Autobiography of the Civil Rights Movement. Published by Arbor House, New York, 1985. Farmer has warmly inscribed the half-title page, “To Lenore Sek, Best Wishes,” followed by his signature and the date, “6-27-85.” Published the same year as its release, the autobiography recounts Farmer’s central role in the modern Civil Rights Movement and provides a firsthand account of the campaigns, protests, and leaders that reshaped American society.

Fine condition. The original dust jacket remains well preserved with light expected handling wear. The hardcover binding is sound with clean interior pages. 

James Farmer (1920-1999) was one of the principal architects of the American Civil Rights Movement and a co-founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1942. A steadfast advocate of nonviolent direct action, Farmer helped organize the landmark Freedom Rides of 1961, which challenged segregation in interstate bus travel throughout the South. Working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, John Lewis, and other leading civil rights figures, Farmer played a pivotal role in dismantling legalized segregation and advancing equal rights for African Americans. In recognition of his lifelong contributions to civil rights and social justice, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton in 1998. Lay Bare the Heart remains one of the definitive firsthand memoirs of the Civil Rights Movement, offering an intimate perspective from one of its most influential leaders.
