Henry Ward Beecher cabinet card photograph by Sarony of New York, depicting the influential abolitionist and clergyman in a seated studio portrait. Accompanying the photograph is a nineteenth-century engraved 5.5 x 9.5" print titled “Eminent Opponents of Slavery”, featuring Beecher among a distinguished group of leading abolitionists including John Quincy Adams, William Lloyd Garrison, John Greenleaf Whittier, Charles Sumner, Joshua R. Giddings, William Cullen Bryant, Cassius M. Clay, Wendell Phillips, Gerrit Smith, Owen Lovejoy, and Benjamin Lundy.
Very good condition. The cabinet card displays light edge and corner wear with scattered age toning. The engraved print exhibits light foxing, toning, and handling wear consistent with age.
Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was one of the most influential American Congregational ministers, abolitionists, and social reformers of the nineteenth century. As pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York, he became nationally known for his outspoken opposition to slavery and his support for the Union during the Civil War. Beecher was also a prominent advocate for women’s suffrage and educational reform and was the brother of Uncle Tom’s Cabin author Harriet Beecher Stowe.
