Franz Sigel (1824-1902) was a German-American military officer and one of the most prominent immigrant generals of the American Civil War. A veteran of the German revolutions of 1848, Sigel emigrated to the United States and became a leading figure within the German-American community. Commissioned as a Union general in 1861, he served in several important campaigns in both the Western and Eastern Theaters. Sigel’s popularity among German immigrants proved invaluable to the Union war effort, inspiring the well-known rallying cry, “I fights mit Sigel.” Although his battlefield record was mixed, his influence helped secure the loyalty and enlistment of thousands of German-American soldiers who played a significant role in preserving the Union.
