Franz Sigel autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated June 29, 1880, from Manhattan. Written entirely in Sigel’s hand and addressed to a physician, the letter is signed, “F. Sigel.”

Franz Sigel writes to thank the recipient for previously sending him articles that had been discussed between them. He explains that he would prefer to pay for the materials when it becomes more convenient for him to do so and requests that the doctor send at least one bottle of coca of a lighter variety, noting that he has already used the previous supply. Sigel remarks that he has not been feeling well and wishes to continue trying the remedy, concluding that he will settle the account once his circumstances improve. The letter provides an interesting glimpse into Sigel’s health concerns and personal affairs during his later years.

Franz Sigel (1824–1902) was a German-born military officer, revolutionary, educator, and prominent Union general during the American Civil War. A veteran of the 1848 revolutions in Germany, Sigel immigrated to the United States and became one of the most influential leaders among German-American communities. During the Civil War he commanded Union forces in several major campaigns, including service in the Shenandoah Valley and at Pea Ridge, and played a significant role in recruiting German immigrants to support the Union cause.
