William Tecumseh Sherman autographed bank check dated September 21, 1874, drawn on Jay Cooke & Co., Bankers, Washington, D.C. The check is accomplished entirely in manuscript and signed “W. T. Sherman” at the lower right. It is payable for $25.50 and bears a 2-cent United States Internal Revenue Bank Check revenue stamp, along with period banking notations and cancellation markings.

Executed during Sherman’s tenure as Commanding General of the United States Army, the check dates from the decade following the Civil War, when he oversaw the Army during the Reconstruction era and the western frontier campaigns. Jay Cooke & Co. was among the nation’s most prominent investment banking firms, closely associated with financing the Union war effort during the Civil War.
