Philip Henry Sheridan (1831–1888) was one of the Union Army’s most celebrated commanders during the American Civil War. A graduate of West Point, he rose rapidly through the ranks and earned national fame for his aggressive leadership in the Western Theater before assuming command of Union cavalry under General Ulysses S. Grant. Sheridan played pivotal roles in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the Appomattox Campaign, and the pursuit that led to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender in April 1865. Remaining in the regular army after the war, he became Commanding General of the United States Army in 1883 and was promoted to the rank of General shortly before his death in 1888. He remains one of the most influential military figures of the nineteenth century and one of the foremost Union commanders of the Civil War.
