Details:
William S. Rosecrans autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, written on official House of Representatives stationery and dated July 3, 1882. Addressed to the New York map publishing firm of J. B. Corton & Co., the letter is entirely penned in Rosecrans’s hand and signed, “W. S. Rosecrans.”
William S. Rosecrans writes to the publishers requesting that they send him, by express shipment, an atlas of the United States and Territories together with individual maps showing the counties of each state and territory. He asks that the most current editions be supplied and requests that the cost be kept as low as possible, indicating that the materials may be shipped express C.O.D. The letter offers an interesting glimpse into the practical information needs of a sitting Congressman during the late nineteenth century.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
William Starke Rosecrans (1819–1898) was a distinguished Union general during the American Civil War whose victories at Iuka, Corinth, and Stones River established him among the Union’s most successful commanders. Following the war, he served as Minister to Mexico, represented California in the U.S. House of Representatives, and remained an influential figure in American public life for decades after the conflict.
