William David Porter (1808-1864) was a United States Navy officer who served with distinction during the American Civil War. A member of the prominent Porter naval family, he was the brother of Admiral David Dixon Porter and the son of Commodore David Porter. During the war, William D. Porter commanded the ironclad gunboat USS Essex, one of the Union Navy’s most active vessels on the western rivers. Under his command, the Essex participated in major operations along the Mississippi River system, including campaigns against Confederate fortifications and support of Union army advances. Porter remained an important figure in the Union’s riverine warfare efforts until his death in 1864 while still in active service.
