John Pope autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated February 3 (year not indicated). Written entirely in Pope’s hand and addressed to E. J. Hamilton, the letter is signed, “Jno. Pope.”
John Pope writes concerning an article that had appeared in the Sentinel regarding his military record. He explains that the publication contained inaccuracies, particularly the claim that no official record existed to support certain statements about his service. Pope points out that there were official records available and expresses appreciation for Hamilton’s interest in the matter. He notes that the editor of the Sentinel is both the author of the article and a personal friend, and closes with warm regards to Hamilton’s family while expressing hope that they will meet again. The letter offers an interesting glimpse into Pope’s concern for the accuracy of his military legacy and public reputation.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
John Pope (1822–1892) was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and rose to prominence as a Union general during the Civil War. He achieved early success in the Western Theater, particularly at Island No. 10, before assuming command of the Army of Virginia in 1862. Although best remembered for his defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Pope continued to serve in important military roles throughout the war and later commanded several major departments during the Indian Wars era.
