Troxell of St. Louis, Missouri, the portrait presents McClellan in a formal bust view and is mounted on the photographer’s card stock bearing an advertisement on the reverse noting the availability of photographs of distinguished army officers.

George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) was one of the most prominent Union generals of the American Civil War. A West Point graduate and accomplished engineer, McClellan was appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac in 1861 and was widely credited with transforming the army into an effective fighting force. His leadership during the Peninsula Campaign and other early operations made him one of the best-known military figures of the war, though his cautious approach frequently brought him into conflict with President Abraham Lincoln. Removed from command in 1862, McClellan later became the Democratic Party’s nominee for President in the election of 1864. Following the war he served as Governor of New Jersey and remained a significant figure in American political and military history.
