Commonwealth of Massachusetts Civil War service certificate issued to Capt. Hiram Alden in recognition of his faithful service during the Civil War. Printed in Boston and dated April 19, 1870, the ornate lithographed certificate bears the printed signatures of Governor William Claflin and Adjutant General William Schouler. Richly decorated with patriotic imagery, the design features the Massachusetts state seal, an American eagle with crossed flags, engraved portraits of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, and military vignettes celebrating the preservation of the Union. Measures approximately 19 x 15.5 inches.
Expected age toning, horizontal and vertical fold lines from period storage, light scattered foxing, and minor edge wear including a few small edge tears and chips.
