Details:
Original souvenir medal issued for the 1904 Manassas Reunion, commemorating the gathering of Union and Confederate veterans at the historic Virginia battlefield. The bronze-toned medal features an ornate cross suspension with a central gilt medallion depicting a Civil War cannon and artilleryman. It is suspended from its original red, white, and blue silk ribbon, printed with commemorative text including “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, The Boys Are Marching,” “Manassas, Va.,” and “1904.” The reverse bears a patriotic inscription within the gilt center surrounded by the maker’s mark, Schwaab S. & S. Co., Milwaukee, while the suspension bar is topped with an American eagle and engraved “SOUVENIR.”
Very good condition. The metal retains an attractive aged patina with light expected wear. The original silk ribbon remains intact.
Held on July 21, 1904, the Manassas Reunion brought together thousands of former Union and Confederate soldiers at the site of the First Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas), the opening major battle of the Civil War. Such reunions became increasingly popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as veterans sought reconciliation and remembrance. Souvenir medals like this were produced as keepsakes for attendees and today represent tangible artifacts from the early movement toward national reconciliation following the Civil War.
