Nathaniel Lyon Civil War-era carte de visite photograph depicting the Union general standing in uniform while holding his military hat and sword. Published by W. L. Troxell of St. Louis, Missouri, the image presents Lyon in a full-length studio pose and is mounted on the photographer’s card stock bearing an advertisement on the reverse for portraits of distinguished Union officers.
Near fine condition with some slight wear along the upper edge.
Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861) was a United States Army officer and Union brigadier general whose actions were instrumental in keeping Missouri from joining the Confederacy during the opening months of the Civil War. A West Point graduate and veteran of the Mexican-American War, Lyon gained national prominence through his decisive leadership during the Missouri secession crisis. On August 10, 1861, he was killed while leading Union forces at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, becoming the first Union general to die in combat during the Civil War. His death made him one of the North’s earliest military martyrs and a symbol of Union resolve during the conflict’s opening year.
