Harper’s Weekly: A Journal of Civilization (New York), Vol. V, No. 245, September 7, 1861. Complete illustrated newspaper featuring the full front-page engraving “A Female Rebel in Baltimore - An Everyday Scene.” The illustration depicts a fashionable Southern sympathizer wearing a dress incorporating the Confederate Stars and Bars while walking the streets of Baltimore, reflecting the divided loyalties and political tensions that characterized the border city during the opening months of the Civil War. The issue contains additional Civil War reports, articles, and engravings.
Fair condition. Light overall toning with scattered foxing, edge wear, chips, and short tears along the margins. There is a nearly full width tear on the back page. The issue is loose along the entire spine but remains complete, consistent with age and handling.
