Anthony of New York, the image presents Halleck in formal military dress during the American Civil War and is mounted on the publisher’s distinctive card stock bearing the firm’s Broadway imprint on the reverse.

Henry Wager Halleck (1815-1872) was one of the most prominent Union military leaders of the American Civil War. A West Point graduate, military scholar, and attorney, Halleck earned the nickname “Old Brains” for his extensive writings on military strategy and engineering. Following early successes in the Western Theater, he was appointed General-in-Chief of all Union armies in 1862, serving as the principal military coordinator for President Abraham Lincoln. Although later overshadowed by Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, Halleck played a critical role in organizing and administering the Union war effort during some of the conflict’s most important years.
