Charles Griffin autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated May 16 (no year). Penned entirely in Griffin’s hand and signed, “Chas. Griffin.”
In this brief and informal note, Griffin discusses the possible purchase of a horse. He reports that he has found a horse that suits him but notes that the animal will cost $180. He then seeks the recipient’s opinion on the matter, adding that the horse is seventeen hands high and described as a “mountain horse.” The letter offers an interesting glimpse into the personal affairs and practical concerns of a career military officer whose profession made horsemanship and the selection of suitable mounts an important part of daily life.
Missing a lower left corner, with archival repair performed. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
Charles Griffin (1825–1867) was a Union general during the Civil War and one of the Army of the Potomac’s most capable division commanders. A West Point graduate and artillery officer, Griffin distinguished himself at numerous engagements including Gaines’ Mill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and the Petersburg Campaign. He commanded a division of the V Corps during the final Appomattox Campaign and was present at the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. Following the war, Griffin served in the Reconstruction South and commanded the District of Texas until his death in 1867.
