Details:
An extensive archive of ten Grand Army of the Republic publications and printed ephemera associated with Louis Bell Post No. 3, Manchester, New Hampshire, dating from 1885 to 1909. The group documents the activities of one of New Hampshire’s most active G.A.R. posts during the height of the Union veterans’ movement and includes official rosters, by-laws, encampment programs, meeting notices, and commemorative publications.
Highlights include the 1883 By-Laws of Louis Bell Post No. 3, an 1888 Official Roster for Louis Bell Post No. 3 and the Louis Bell Woman’s Relief Corps No. 17, an 1890 roster, an 1885 Grand Ball program, an Official Tour booklet for the 43rd Annual Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic held in Salt Lake City in August 1909 for the Departments of Vermont and New Hampshire, the Roll of the Encampment for the Twenty-Fourth Annual Session of the Department of New Hampshire (1891), together with additional post publications, meeting announcements, and souvenir booklets. Many retain their original decorative wrappers featuring the distinctive Grand Army of the Republic medal and patriotic designs.
Very good condition overall.
Founded in 1866, the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) became the nation’s largest organization of Union Civil War veterans, advocating for veterans’ pensions, preserving the memory of the Union cause, and promoting patriotic education. Local posts served as social, charitable, and civic organizations for former soldiers while organizing reunions, memorial observances, and national encampments. Named in honor of Union General Louis Bell, Manchester’s Louis Bell Post No. 3 was among New Hampshire’s leading G.A.R. organizations, and this archive provides an excellent cross-section of its administrative records and commemorative publications spanning more than two decades of post-war veteran activity.
