James W. Ellsworth completed this Grand Army of the Republic Post Historian service record form documenting his Civil War military service. Measuring approximately 11.25 x 16 inches, the manuscript records Ellsworth’s enlistment on August 26, 1862, as a Private in Company G, 4th Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers. He lists participation in many of the war’s major engagements, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Hatcher’s Run, Drury’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, and others. Ellsworth further records that he was wounded at Cold Harbor on June 2, 1864, later hospitalized at Carver Hospital in Washington, and concludes the form with the poignant statement, “All of it was important,” when asked to identify the most important events of his service.

James W. Ellsworth served with the 4th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, one of the state’s most active Civil War regiments. Organized in 1861, the regiment fought in many of the Eastern Theater’s most significant campaigns, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg, sustaining heavy casualties while earning a distinguished combat record.
