The Civil War-era lithograph, measuring approximately 15.5 x 13.5 inches and professionally linen-backed, satirizes Confederate President Jefferson Davis’s alleged escape from Richmond in disguise at the close of the Civil War. Included with the print is an engraved portrait of Jefferson Davis.

The Currier & Ives print has been professionally linen-backed for preservation, with expected fold lines, moderate age toning, and light handling wear. The accompanying engraved portrait displays expected age toning and minor wear consistent with its age.

Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) served as the first and only President of the Confederate States of America from 1861 until the Confederacy’s collapse in 1865. Following the fall of Richmond and his capture by Union forces, Northern publishers produced numerous satirical prints mocking the defeated Confederate leader. Among the most famous was Currier & Ives’ The Last Ditch of the Chivalry, or A President in Petticoats, a political cartoon inspired by the widespread claim that Davis attempted to evade capture while disguised in women’s clothing. Although modern historians generally agree the popular story was exaggerated, the image became one of the defining pieces of Civil War political satire and remains one of the best-known caricatures of Jefferson Davis produced during the era.
