Samuel Ryan Curtis (1805-1866) was a soldier, engineer, lawyer, and politician who served as a Union major general during the American Civil War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Curtis later represented Iowa in Congress before returning to military service at the outbreak of war. He achieved lasting fame in March 1862 when his Army of the Southwest defeated Confederate forces under Earl Van Dorn at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas, securing Missouri for the Union and effectively ending major Confederate efforts to reclaim the state. Curtis subsequently commanded departments and military districts throughout the western theater and played an important role in maintaining Union control across the Trans-Mississippi region. Today he is remembered as one of the Union’s most capable western commanders and a key figure in preserving Federal authority west of the Mississippi River.
