Details:
The Soldiers’ Hymn-Book, With Tunes, published by the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association during the American Civil War. Measuring approximately 2.75 x 4.25 inches, this pocket-sized hymnal was designed to be easily carried by Union soldiers in the field. The volume contains dozens of hymns and musical settings intended to provide spiritual encouragement and comfort to troops throughout the war. The introductory pages note the efforts of the United States Christian Commission and the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association in supplying soldiers with religious literature, while the text concludes with an invitation for returning servicemen to visit the Association’s rooms in Boston.
Good condition. Original paper wrappers remain intact with expected edge wear, soiling, and scattered staining from period use. The spine covering exhibits wear and loss, though the text block remains complete and securely bound. Interior pages are generally clean with expected age toning.
Pocket religious books such as this were among the most common personal items carried by Civil War soldiers. Distributed by organizations including the United States Christian Commission and the Young Men’s Christian Association, these inexpensive hymnals accompanied thousands of Union servicemen into camps, hospitals, and battlefields.
