Fred Bock autographed commemorative airmail cover honoring the 509th Composite Group, signed in black ink. Bock was the B-29 pilot for whom the atomic bomb aircraft Bockscar was named. Although his own aircraft, The Great Artiste, flew the instrumentation mission over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, his assigned B-29 was flown by Major Charles W. Sweeney to deliver the Fat Man atomic bomb, forever linking Bock’s name to one of history’s most consequential military missions.

Frederick C. “Fred” Bock (1918–2000) was a U.S. Army Air Forces major and one of the elite pilots of the 509th Composite Group. His B-29, Bockscar, became the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, while Bock himself piloted The Great Artiste as the mission’s instrumentation aircraft. A veteran of numerous combat missions during World War II, Bock played a significant role in the final operations of the Manhattan Project and the missions that brought the war in the Pacific to a close.
