Fred Bock autographed First Day Cover commemorating the 45th anniversary of the 509th Composite Group and the atomic bomb missions. Bock has signed in black ink.

Fred Bock (1918-2000) was a U.S. Army Air Forces captain and B-29 pilot with the elite 509th Composite Group during World War II. Although Major Charles W. Sweeney piloted the aircraft on the Nagasaki mission, the B-29 Bockscar bore Bock’s name because it had normally been assigned to his crew. On August 9, 1945, Bock instead piloted the observation aircraft The Great Artiste, which accompanied Bockscar during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki to collect blast and scientific data. Following the war, Bock remained active in reunions and historical commemorations honoring the men of the 509th Composite Group and their role in ending World War II.
