Joseph A. Badali autographed commemorative cover honoring the 509th Composite Group, signed in black ink and additionally inscribed, “Little Boy Bomb Assembler / 216th B.U.” Badali served with the 216th Base Unit, the specialized ordnance organization responsible for the assembly, testing, and preparation of the atomic bombs used at the end of World War II. He was among the personnel who assembled the Little Boy uranium bomb prior to its deployment against Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Joseph A. Badali served with the 216th Army Air Forces Base Unit (Special), the elite ordnance unit tasked with assembling and preparing the world’s first operational atomic weapons. Working alongside members of the Manhattan Project and the 509th Composite Group, the 216th Base Unit performed the final assembly of Little Boy before its loading aboard the Enola Gay for the Hiroshima mission. Badali’s role placed him among the select group of technicians directly involved in one of the most significant technological and military operations of the twentieth century.
