Details:
William H. Emory autographed handwritten letter (ALS), two pages written on both sides of a single sheet, dated September 8, 1836, from Charleston. Written entirely in Emory’s hand and signed, “W. H. E.,” the letter is addressed to a fellow Army officer identified as “Captain.”
In this lengthy and highly personal letter, Emory discusses his impending resignation from the United States Army, expressing both his attachment to military service and his concerns about the financial realities facing him. He notes that he has submitted his resignation and reflects upon the difficulty of leaving a profession to which he has become deeply devoted. Emory candidly discusses his modest military pay, family obligations, and hopes for success in civilian life, while also commenting on mutual acquaintances and Army affairs. Written when Emory was still a young officer decades before achieving national prominence, the letter provides a revealing glimpse into a pivotal moment in his career as he contemplated leaving the service.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
William Hemsley Emory (1811–1887) was a distinguished United States Army officer, explorer, engineer, and cartographer. He first gained prominence during the surveying expeditions of the American Southwest and later served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of major general, commanding troops in the Army of the Potomac and later in the Gulf Department. Emory also played an important role in mapping and documenting the American frontier, and his surveys remain among the most important records of the Southwest prior to the Civil War.
