Details:
John E. Wool (1784-1869), one of the longest-serving officers in United States military history, autographed handwritten letter (ALS), Washington, D.C., May 29, 1846. Two pages, written on both sides of a single sheet.
An important Mexican-American War letter documenting the early mobilization and supply of volunteer forces destined for service on the Mexican frontier. Written just weeks after the outbreak of hostilities, Wool addresses the Chief of Ordnance regarding his newly assigned responsibility to supervise the inspection and muster of volunteers from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Recognizing the immense logistical challenges involved, he requests detailed information regarding the government’s plans to equip and sustain these forces, including arms, accouterments, ammunition, subsistence, camp equipage, transportation, and the officers responsible for providing such supplies.
In part:
“Having been directed to superintend the inspection & muster of the Volunteers called into the service of the U.S. from the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee & Mississippi destined for the frontier of Mexico…”
The letter offers a fascinating glimpse into the administrative and logistical preparations undertaken by the United States Army during the opening phase of the Mexican-American War, as volunteer regiments from across the Midwest and South were assembled and prepared for active service.
Fine condition.
