Details:
John H. Winder war-dated clipped signature on a 4.5 x 1.25” slip, comprising the closing of a handwritten letter signed, “Your obt. Servt. / Jno H. Winder / Brig. Gen.” A scarce surviving example from one of the Confederacy’s most controversial military figures, with Winder signing in his capacity as a Confederate brigadier general during the Civil War.
Fine condition.
John Henry Winder (1800–1865) was a career U.S. Army officer who resigned his commission to join the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War. As Confederate Commissary General of Prisons, he oversaw the Southern prison system, including the notorious prisoner-of-war camps at Libby Prison in Richmond and Andersonville Prison in Georgia. The severe overcrowding, disease, malnutrition, and extraordinarily high mortality rates at these facilities made Winder one of the Confederacy’s most controversial officers. He died in February 1865, only months before the end of the war, avoiding the possibility of prosecution for his administration of the Confederate prison system. Because of his wartime role and relatively limited surviving correspondence, authentic signatures of Winder are considerably scarcer than those of many other Confederate generals.
