“A remnant gathers now and then
To live the old scenes o’er again,
That tried the best and bravest men,
In perils day and night.”
Written by celebrated American poet John Greenleaf Whittier, Quartermaster Ben reflects on the enduring bonds formed during the Civil War and the memories shared by aging Union veterans. Through images of campfires, marches, and battlefield recollections, Whittier pays tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and comradeship of those who preserved the Union. The attractive presentation, complete with its original string binding and period illustration, was intended as a keepsake celebrating the legacy of the Grand Army of the Republic generation.
Very good condition. Light expected age toning.
John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was one of America’s foremost poets and an outspoken abolitionist whose writings championed freedom, social justice, and national unity. A member of the Fireside Poets, Whittier’s Civil War poetry inspired Union supporters and, in the decades following the conflict, helped shape the nation’s collective memory of the sacrifices made by its soldiers. His works remain among the most enduring literary tributes to the Union cause.
