Whicher served with the 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, a regiment that saw extensive action in the Department of the South before many of its veterans were transferred to the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. His recorded service spans some of the Civil War’s most significant operations along the Atlantic coast, including the assault on Fort Wagner and the final campaigns leading to the capture of Wilmington, North Carolina.
