John Augustine Washington 6.5 x 9” printed broadside poem honoring the Confederate officer and aide-de-camp to General Robert E. Lee. The piece is titled with Washington’s name and service, noting his death at Valley Mountain on September 13, 1861, and features a full commemorative poem reflecting on his character, sacrifice, and loyalty.

The broadside was most likely produced for a veterans’ reunion or memorial gathering, a common practice in the late 19th century as Confederate veterans and their families commemorated fallen figures of the Civil War. John Augustine Washington III (1821–1861) was a member of the Washington family and served as aide-de-camp to General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. Formerly the last private owner of Mount Vernon before its sale to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Washington was killed early in the conflict at the Battle of Cheat Mountain (Valley Mountain), becoming one of the notable early Confederate officer casualties.
