Joseph Gilbert Totten (1788-1864) was one of the most accomplished military engineers in American history. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Totten served with distinction during the War of 1812 and spent much of his career overseeing the design and construction of the nation’s coastal fortifications. In 1838 he was appointed Chief Engineer of the United States Army, a position he held for more than twenty-five years. During the Civil War, Totten remained the Army’s senior engineering officer and played an important role in the planning and supervision of military defenses. His contributions to American military engineering were so significant that he is widely regarded as the father of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
