Details:
Alfred H. Terry autographed handwritten letter (ALS), one page, dated May 7, 1876, from St. Paul, Minnesota. Written entirely in Terry’s hand and signed, “Alfred H. Terry,” the letter is addressed to noted newspaperman, author, and future founder of the Detroit Institute of Arts, William Henry Brearley.
In this brief personal note, Terry apologizes to Brearley for neglecting to return an enclosed item at an earlier date. He explains that he has been exceedingly busy and that the oversight had simply slipped his mind. Though concise, the letter reflects a personal correspondence between Terry and the prominent journalist and cultural figure William Henry Brearley during a particularly significant period in Terry’s military career, only weeks before the opening stages of the 1876 Sioux Campaign.
Fine condition. Tipped into a slightly larger backing sheet along the edges only.
Alfred Howe Terry (1827–1890) was a Union general during the Civil War and later one of the most important commanders of the postwar U.S. Army. He successfully directed operations against Fort Fisher in North Carolina, helping secure the Confederacy’s final major Atlantic port. Following the war, Terry played a leading role in the Indian Wars and commanded the Dakota Column during the 1876 campaign against the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne. His forces participated in the operations that culminated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, and he remained a key figure in western military affairs for the remainder of his career.
